Virginia Thomas Apple Butter

5 lbs. apples, Johnathan or MacIntoch
4 cups water
5 cups sugar
2 1/2 t. cinnamon
1 1/4 t. cloves
Wash apples, cut into pieces, remove stems and blossoms. Do not core or peel. Add water, cover pasn and bring to boil. Cook gentley until apples are soft, 15 min. Put through seive. Add sugar, cinnamon and cloves.

Return to stove, simmer until thick, 30 min. Turn into hot jars and seal.
